Phi Psi and Swat Sudan are teaming up to raise money for efforts to end the genocide in Darfur. The two organizations will co-host a Late Night fundraiser at the Phi Psi fraternity house on Thursday, March 29 after Pub Nite.

There will be drinks provided, and there will be collection buckets at the entrance and food for sale, with proceeds going to Swat Sudan.

This is the first collaboration between Phi Psi and Swat Sudan. Still, it is not the first time Swat Sudan has branched out to other campus groups in its fundraising, as it did in a joint effort with the men’s soccer team on Feb. 4 during their youth clinic.

“On Swat Sudan’s end, we want to attract a broader gap of people and make it so they can enjoy themselves while contributing to a worthwhile cause,” group member Alexander Imas ’10 said.

In addition to his enthusiasm for Phi Psi’s support of Swat Sudan, Imas also pointed out certain advantages to the partnership.

“Working with Phi Psi makes it easier [for Swat Sudan] because fundraisers require a facility, people and advertising,” Imas said.

“Working with them makes our job easier in terms of setting up because we then just need to worry about the fundraising and advertising aspect. And Phi Psi people have their group of friends, which makes it easier to attract a different group,” Imas said.

Phi Psi has been involved in many community service projects, such as a walk last semester in support of people with Down syndrome.

They are also planning another walk during reading week later this semester for multiple sclerosis research.

“Phi Psi has always been involved with community service, especially this semester,” fraternity brother Ben Young ’09 said.

Both groups feel positively about working together. “Phi Psi actually approached us to do a fundraiser,” Erin Heaney ’09 said.

“I’m really excited about it,” Young said. “It’s a really good start to forming a good bond with other groups and to becoming a more united campus.”

This would be the first time that Phi Psi has worked with a group on campus to do community service.

“We just thought they had such an important issue that they were dealing with and that we should get the campus involved,” Phi Psi brother Anthony Phalen ‘10 said of the fraternity’s cooperation with Swat Sudan.

“I think we’re doing a great thing and providing a good opportunity to raise a lot of money for a situation that needs a lot of help,” Phalen said.

“I think it’s really great that Swat Sudan can work with other organizations. We’re really excited to be working with Phi Psi. It is a unique opportunity and we’re really excited that they approached us,” Heaney said.

This event will only take place one night, but both groups are already planning similar events. “We’ll see how it goes and go from there,” Phalen said.
