In preparation for the Large Scale Event this November, the LSE Committee has chosen local Philly band The Brakes as an opener for the New Pornographers.
Formed in 2001, The Brakes have practically achieved instantaneous nationwide recognition as a new rock group comprised of several talented young musicians. Some of the acts with which they have performed in the past are Robert Randolph, Chris Robinson & New Earth Mud, The Disco Biscuits and moe.
Yuan Liu ‘09, a member of the LSE committee, said that the band was an ideal choice, given its familiarity with the area. "We were looking for a Philly band because they’re local," she said. “We asked around, and talked to some friends from around here. Harrison Russin ’09 recommended The Brakes. So, we researched the band, listened to some of their music online and decided on them.”
While Liu described the New Pornographers as “very new rock,” she said the committee was looking for more of a contrast in the openers. “[The Brakes] are very fusion, kind of hippy, psychedelic, but also jazzy and upbeat,” she said. “We were really going for upbeat, so people could get into it.”
Emily Sun ‘09, also a member of the LSE committee, said that she thought that The Brakes’ style would mesh well with the main act. “I think it will be good. People who are more into rock might appreciate The Brakes more, just because the New Pornographers are a little more alternative,” she said. “Hopefully there will be a good turnout.”
The LSE will take place on Nov. 10 in Lang Performing Arts Center.
