After playing a superb opening game against Dickinson on Friday night, the Garnet volleyball team couldn’t keep the pressure on the Red Devils, who won the next three games to take the win, 21-30, 30-23, 30-28, 30-24. It was the second conference loss for the Tide on the season.
Swarthmore used strong blocking to take the first game from Dickinson, committing only one error. But the Red Devils took advantage of Garnet mistakes early in the second game to claim the momentum that would lead them to victory. Swarthmore appeared ready to take the advantage back with a 24-21 lead late in the third game, but Dickinson put away three straight kills and added two aces to reclaim the lead in the game, winning on a kill on Swarthmore’s serve. The Garnet kept the fourth game close as well, clinging to a 12-12 tie with the Red Devils midway through the game before Dickinson took over and closed out the match.
“I don’t think we ever brought back our team chemistry after the first game,” Jen Wang ‘09 said. "We just didn’t want it as bad as they did."
With Swarthmore still in the hunt for a playoff berth, the upcoming conference games will be key to determining the Garnet’s fate. After Friday, the squad is looking at this week as “a new beginning,” Wang said.
“We’re continuing to improve upon our team chemistry, and finding what is going to make our team click,” coach Harleigh Leach said.
In a late game yesterday, Johns Hopkins held off the Garnet in a five-game nailbiter, 26-30, 30-17, 30-23, 34-36, 15-13. The Garnet now sits with a 3-3 record in the Centennial conference (10-6 overall).
